Ocala, located in north-central Florida, is best known for its gurgling mineral
springs, lush green grass and champion, thoroughbred horses. The city is also
a point of significant historical interest. Many of the Victorian homes from
Ocala's boom era in the 1930s still line the streets of downtown. Fort King
Avenue's historic residential district showcases over 200 wooden, steamboat-era
mansions designed in an eclectic mix of styles ranging from Queen Anne Revival
to Italianate. Today, the city's historic buildings, many of which house delis,
pubs and antique stores, are complemented by modern shops and hotels. A number
of interesting attractions are waiting to be discovered, including the Appleton
Museum of Art, which offers guided tours of the Museum's historical collections;
the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, which features classic dragsters and
antique automobiles; and the Discovery Science Center, which offers hands-on,
indoor and outdoor exhibits.
